Users Stopping Anti-Obesity Medications Regain Pounds Four Times Faster Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

A recent study suggests that people who discontinue new weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain reduced body mass far faster than those who end conventional diet and exercise regimens.

Research printed in a prominent health publication points out that while overweight people frequently drop substantial amounts of their body weight while on the medication, the weight is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"People buying such treatments must be informed of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the therapy is stopped," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain implies a reversion to original mass within about 18 months.

Analyzing Treatments

The research, which reviewed dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the effects of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.

Scientists emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone generally see a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Understanding the Fast Regain

Nutrition scientists propose the way of the jabs accounts for the amplified rebound.

GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates hunger.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels far above than normal could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also reduce sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Discontinuation of this medication means appetite is unsuppressed, making excessive eating much more probable."

An Ongoing Disease?

Medical guidelines advise the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals contend that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy might need to be long-term.

This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "emphasize the long-term character of obesity," similar to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

Patient Experiences

Users who have stopped the medication describe a powerful resurgence of cravings.

"It felt as if a trigger that goes on and you become ravenous," described a patient.

This challenge is exacerbated if individuals have not established permanent lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Growing Adoption

Recent estimates indicate that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with interest remaining high.

  • Use is more common among women than males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Ultimately, experts caution that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent solution and lasting health benefits hinges on combined behavioural support.
