The Legendary Anime Ends a 27-Year Tradition in the Coming Year

This marks the conclusion of an iconic period for ongoing anime, with Toei Animation revealing a revised release plan for the beloved series, which has been airing for more than 25 years and featured dozens of filler arcs. Commencing in the new year, after the current storyline wraps up, the anime will take a quarterly break until April, when the next major arc begins.

Updated Production Plan

Going forward, the series will release two seasons every annually for a maximum of 26 episodes. Toei explains this will help the anime to “dive even deeper into the core of the universe — including more content, tempo, and pacing of the source material.” However, producers end by promising “exciting surprises” during the series' break, which suggests additional related projects, such as Netflix's live-action season 2, scheduled to debut during this gap.

Learning from Past Breaks

The One Piece anime previously took a six-month pause that started in October 2024 and concluded in April 2025. The hiatus was for the animators to enhance the visuals and let the comic to get further ahead to prevent a rushed adaptation and lengthy recap episodes. The show greatly benefited from this break, and it has been able to supply viewers with countless action sequences, high-quality animation, and less filler than ever before.

Adopting Modern Trends

Although some recap episodes sprouted up during this season, the benefits of this new production schedule greatly outweigh the odd pause in the story. This also gives the manga, which is currently in the middle of the latest arc, to extend its lead on the anime. According to the news, this may result in one episode of the series adapting a single manga chapter, with some alternatively covering more material or more to compensate for scheduling.

This concludes of a generation for Japanese animation, as the epic saga is the final major title to ditch the old-school way of creation, which prioritized airing for almost the entire year. This explains why iconic series such as Bleach, and naturally One Piece have so many filler arcs, and the standard of the animation can change drastically between installments and the next. Nowadays, series creation is structured in cours, with one or two at most coming out each year, allowing for improved visuals and more faithfulness to the original work.
