Tetris Didn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — A New Category Might Solve This

Whenever a significant prize-giving event draws close, you'll find a clamor for the addition additional classifications to acknowledge unsung work and satisfy the hearts of followers who have specialized interests.

Another commentator made the case advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. The same goes for board games, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance when I prioritize since similar to single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request stands as crucial and significant. The demand is this: There should be a category for puzzle games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; it remains highly personal, and typically spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason cinema institutions steer clear of genre categories. However, it represents a necessary evil within the realm of gaming, showing incredible range they hardly constitute as a single art form.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to be recognized, and for games of all stripes to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.

Existing Game Classification System

Leading game ceremonies currently feature classifications covering Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these classifications effectively encompass many game types, allowing placement for numerous titles.

Not so for brain-teasing titles. No suitable classification appears to accommodate them. Think about these this year’s best games, each quite distinct: the architectural riddles in a particular game, intense tile-matching of another game, engaging interpersonal challenges in another game. Which classification works among existing types? Nowhere, that’s where.

Recognition Challenges

There are dozens outstanding logic titles published annually that have no home during gaming ceremonies, unless they happen to qualify for categories like Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested independent game categories.

  • One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated for anything in 2014
  • Another imaginative release was excluded in 2019
  • A beloved organization game got ignored that year
  • Only a few brain-teasers managed to sneak into small studio or handheld classifications

Importance of Logic Titles

These are often modest productions, but the art in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Well-known matching games stand as most popular titles in the world and have been for many years.

The iconic tile-matching title challenges popular creative games competing to become highest-selling title ever; it also contends for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks to the art of video games, and they are in conversation across multiple categories.

The Solution and Justification

Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. It would be easy to populate five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent many worthy titles.

And to reiterate, these represent titles that otherwise have no home in important events. Brain-teaser creators operate at the challenging frontier of video game design, producing among essential manifestations of the video game form. Just like film action specialists, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay decades.
