2K Brings Onboard Popular Battle Royale Developer to Rescue Struggling Action Game Project Ethos

2K Games has welcomed a seasoned producer from the creators of Apex Legends to lead the studio crew at their internal studio, which is currently crafting the forthcoming third-person action-packed title known as this innovative game.

Management Shift Follows Poor Feedback

Brinkman steps into the leadership position at 31st Union following the exit of previous head the ex-Sledgehammer Games executive, who was reportedly let go due to the game's underwhelming initial reveal last fall.

On Wednesday, 2K president a key figure updated staff about this organizational change through an internal memo, which highlighted that early feedback sessions had shown the need for a clearer vision.

Ismailer stated that the team is now refining Project Ethos with a refreshed focus, aiming to address player expectations.

Trend of Key Acquisitions

This announcement mirrors a similar step taken by the publisher in the summer, when they recruited Rod Fergusson from the Diablo team to work on the BioShock studio Cloud Chamber.

Below is the full message from the president's communication:

Team—

I know you all just completed your town hall - I hope you’re as excited as I am with the recent updates. Previously I sent you all a update, I stated the following: “I believe in this group. You all are some of the most motivated and creative creators we have had the pleasure to partner with - and we’re excited for that collaboration to continue.”

Given your hard work and adaptability, especially over the past twelve months, you consistently demonstrate that.

The community feedback from last fall’s Project ETHOS testing phase was enlightening. It confirmed the appeal of a roguelike shooter but told us we still had improvements to make. It uncovered the necessity for a more distinct brand.

It’s been inspiring to see how far you’ve advanced. You accepted the feedback to heart and overhauled Project ETHOS with a revitalized vision - one that’s positioned to deliver on its ambition to our fans.

Our confidence in this project strengthens every day. To further the incredible progress you’ve made, It is a pleasure to welcome Ben Brinkman as the latest Studio Head of 31st Union. After a period of conversations, Ben comes aboard us on next week.

Ben’s management and expertise in the PVP shooter space is vast, having devoted the last 15 years producing and leading some of the most recognizable franchises in gaming, such as the acclaimed shooter, and lately, Apex Legends.

Let’s together in receiving Ben in the coming days. We are all looking forward to keep witnessing the progress of the game in the months to ahead.

The President

Experience of the New Leader

Brinkman currently serves in the role of executive producer and production lead at the renowned studio for Apex Legends. Brinkman previously was employed at major gaming companies in diverse production roles on the Call of Duty series, and, earlier in his career, had assignments at 2K and Electronic Arts.

Title Information and Vision

Project Ethos was announced in last year alongside a early access event. Then, 31st Union portrayed the title as a "free-to-play, 3rd-person roguelike hero shooter and an exciting evolution on the category."

"Create your ideal gameplay session—or face defeat—in this engaging over-the-shoulder adventure! Build your hero in real-time to suit your personal playstyle," the description reads. "Take on the competition with unique powers, challenges, and tests that evolve every match. Do you withdraw carefully with your valuable rewards? Or take a risk, put it on the line, and pray your squad can achieve the highest spot? The choice is yours."

Project Ethos has not yet received an official release date or supported systems, but fans can look forward to more updates as creation continues.
